 2017 Preview

Mary Montgomery completed the 2016 season with a 5-5 record. Last year Mary Montgomery finished sixth in Class 7A region one with a 4-4 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Vikings improved in 2016 with their first winning season since 2002. The Vikings won as many games as in any season since 2002. The Vikings have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2002 season and would love to end that streak this year. They have never won a playoff game in the school's history.

Since 2010, Mary Montgomery has gone a combined 21-49. Their 30.0% winning percentage ranks 28th in Class 7A over the past seven seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Mary Montgomery has not won much with a record of 84-167. Their 34.0% winning percentage ranks 29th in Class 7A and 326th in the AHSAA.

Brian Seymore leaves Mary Montgomery after just two seasons with a 8-12 record. His last team finished 5-5 which was the best record at MGM since the 2002 season.

Chris Wilson leaves Starughn after only two seasons to accept the head coaching job at Mary Montgomery. He led the team to 5-6 and 4-6 records and went 1-2 in the playoffs.

Wilson has previously been the head football coach at Washing County where his teams finished a combined 57-12 in five seasons including two trips to the Super Six.

Coach Wilson's overall record as a head football coach in seven season stands at 66-24 (73.3%). Over the course of his career, Coach Wilson's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times and won two region championships.

While a 5-5 record is not considered great at most schools, it is the best the Vikings have managed wince 2002.

The Mary Montgomery Vikings will play in Class 7A region one during the 2017 season.

With a little luck and some improvement, the Vikings could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region one this season. Mary Montgomery has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2002 but hope to return to the post season this year.

Junior Karie White returns after rushing for 461 yards on 90 carries and scoring 0 touchdowns.

The Vikings open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent UMS-Wright on Friday, August 25 at Grider Field. Last year the UMS-Wright Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 9-3 and in third place in Class 4A region one. The Bulldogs lost in the second round of the Class 4A playoffs to Handley by a score of 20-14.

Mary Montgomery and UMS-Wright have met a total of 15 times on the football field. The Vikings have a 5-10-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2016 with Mary Montgomery winning by a score of 7-6.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

The Tuscaloosa Black Bears were considered one of the best programs in the nation from 1925-1931. Their record over that span was an amazing 61-0-3.
